## Description

Image Credit Companion (ICC) is a comprehensive WordPress plugin designed to help
content creators and editors properly track, manage, and display image attribution
information. Whether you’re running a news site, blog, or any content-driven website,
ICC ensures you maintain proper image credits and comply with licensing requirements.

#### Key Features

 * **Automatic Image Detection**: Automatically scans and tracks images used in
   posts, supporting both Gutenberg blocks and Classic Editor content
 * **Editor-Friendly Interface**: Gutenberg sidebar panel for easy metadata management
   during content creation
 * **Flexible Output Options**: Display image sources via shortcodes, dynamic blocks,
   or automatic footer injection
 * **Comprehensive Admin Interface**: Site-wide overview with filtering, bulk editing,
   and usage statistics
 * **Template System**: Customizable output templates with theme override support
 * **Performance Optimized**: Efficient database design with caching and indexed
   queries
 * **Security First**: Proper sanitization, validation, and capability-based access
   control

#### How It Works

 1. **Detection**: When you save a post, ICC automatically scans the content for images
    in various formats:
 2. * Gutenberg blocks (Image, Gallery, Cover, Media & Text)
     * Classic Editor HTML content
     * Inline images in paragraph blocks
 3. **Storage**: Image usage is tracked in a custom database table, while metadata (
    author, source, license) is stored as attachment post meta
 4. **Management**: Editors can add metadata through:
 5.  * Gutenberg sidebar panel (per-post view)
     * Media modal (global attachment editing)
     * Admin bulk editing interface
 6. **Display**: Image sources can be shown using:
 7.  * Shortcodes: `[imagcrco_image_sources]` or `[imagcrco_post_image_sources]`
     * Dynamic block: « Image Sources » block
     * Automatic footer injection (configurable)

#### Supported Image Sources

 * Core Image blocks
 * Gallery blocks
 * Cover blocks
 * Media & Text blocks
 * Classic Editor HTML images
 * Inline images in paragraph blocks

#### Output Formats

 * **Unordered List**: Clean bullet-point format
 * **Ordered List**: Numbered list format
 * **Inline**: Comma-separated inline format

#### Template Customization

ICC supports theme overrides for complete customization. Create templates in your
theme:

 * `yourtheme/image-credit-companion/list-ul.php`
 * `yourtheme/image-credit-companion/list-ol.php`
 * `yourtheme/image-credit-companion/list-inline.php`

### Usage Examples

#### Basic Shortcode Usage

Display image sources for the current post:
 [imagcrco_image_sources]

Display all image sources site-wide:
 [imagcrco_image_sources scope= »site »]

Display with specific formatting:
 [imagcrco_image_sources list= »ol » show_missing
= »true »]

Display the credit line of the current post’s featured image (e.g. inside an Elementor
single post template, below the featured image widget):
 [imagcrco_image_credit]

Display the credit line of a specific image:
 [imagcrco_image_credit attachment_id
= »123″]

**Note:** For backward compatibility, the legacy shortcodes `[image_sources]` and`[
post_image_sources]` are still supported but the prefixed versions above are recommended.

#### Advanced Shortcode Attributes

 * `scope`: « post » (default) or « site »
 * `post_id`: Specific post ID (for post scope)
 * `list`: « table », « ul », « ol », or « inline » (default: the Default Output
   Style setting)
 * `show_missing`: « true » or « false » (default: false)
 * `per_page`: Items per page for site-wide pagination (default: 20)

#### Dynamic Block Usage

 1. Add the « Image Sources » block to your post or page
 2. Configure the block settings in the sidebar
 3. Choose scope, list style, and other options
 4. The block will automatically display the appropriate image sources

## FAQ

attributes to control list style, scope, and other options.

## Changelog

#### 1.2.2

 * New: Generic Elementor detection — the featured image credit now also works with
   theme-specific Elementor widgets (e.g. magazine themes like Kicker): any widget
   whose output contains the current post’s featured image gets the credit, including
   CSS background-image layouts
 * New: Fallback for themes that render the featured image via wp_get_attachment_image()
   directly instead of the_post_thumbnail() (WordPress 5.6+)
 * Safety: Multi-image widgets (sliders, galleries, related posts) are never touched
   by the generic detection

#### 1.2.1

 * New: Elementor support — the credit is now applied to Elementor’s Featured Image
   widget (Theme Builder), which bypasses the standard WordPress featured image
   filter
 * New: Featured image credit locations — choose exactly where the credit appears
   via checkboxes: single posts, pages, homepage/blog index, archives (categories,
   tags, dates, authors) and search results
 * New: [imagcrco_image_credit] shortcode — outputs the credit line of the current
   post’s featured image (or any image via attachment_id) for use in page builder
   templates
 * New: Cover block support — when a theme shows the featured image as a Cover block
   background, the credit is placed as an overlay inside the cover instead of being
   hidden behind the image
 * Fix: Theme-safe wrappers — the caption mode adds no layout box at all, and featured
   image overlays pass the theme sizing through, so image size and position are
   never affected (some themes previously hid the featured image entirely)

#### 1.2.0

 * Fix: Shortcodes used without attributes (e.g. plain [imagcrco_image_sources])
   caused a fatal error due to strict parameter types — WordPress passes an empty
   string instead of an array and null as content; both are now handled safely
 * Fix: The documented per_page shortcode attribute was ignored — it now controls
   pagination for site-wide output
 * New: Credit on Images — show each image’s credit (author / license / source)
   directly on the page
 * New: Credit as a caption below the image or as an overlay on the image (bottom
   left, bottom center or bottom right)
 * New: Works for featured images and content images (image blocks, classic editor
   images, galleries), each individually toggleable
 * New: Optional credit prefix text (e.g. « Image: » or « Photo: »)
 * New: Overlay styling options — background color, background opacity and distance
   from the image edges (default 8px)
 * New: Overlay layout option — single line (« Author / License / Source », long
   credits shortened with an ellipsis) or stacked (one item per line)
 * New: eiam_image_credit_html filter to customize the per-image credit output

#### 1.1.0

 * Fix: The Gutenberg « Image Sources » sidebar panel never loaded because the script
   was shipped as untranspiled JSX; it is now plain JavaScript that runs without
   a build step
 * Fix: Bulk editing now works — added the missing AJAX handler so the bulk edit
   modal actually saves author/source/license data
 * Fix: Removed the broken PHP session-based bulk flow (sessions are discouraged
   and the redirect targeted the wrong screen)
 * Fix: Admin notices are now properly dismissible (corrected a mangled « is-dismissible»
   CSS class and the editor Notice prop)
 * Fix: Image detection from plain URLs now uses WordPress core’s attachment_url_to_postid()
   instead of a query that ignored the file path
 * Fix: « Apply Defaults » in the editor sidebar now applies your configured default
   values (author, source, license, note), which were never passed to the script
   before
 * Fix: Corrected a wrong namespace fallback (\ISM\Settings) in the table template
 * Fix: Post-image cache no longer stores a null value on a failed query, preventing
   a possible type error
 * Improvement: Posts are scanned once per save (removed a redundant wp_insert_post
   hook that duplicated the work)
 * Improvement: Dynamic block is now registered from block.json metadata (single
   source of truth)
 * Cleanup: Removed all development debug logging (error_log/print_r) and the leftover[
   imagcrco_debug] / [imagcrco_test] shortcodes
 * Compatibility: Tested up to WordPress 7.0; minimum WordPress raised to 6.0 (required
   by the block editor API)

#### 1.0.1

 * Fix: « Custom Colors » theme was silently rejected by the sanitizer — the option
   now saves correctly and applies all 14 customizable colors
 * Fix: « Output Template » Separator and Prefix Label settings never worked due
   to missing dot-notation support in the settings reader
 * Fix: License Type dropdown (CC BY, CC0, etc.) was never applied to new uploads—
   it now sets the license name automatically
 * Fix: « Auto » output theme now genuinely inherits colors from your active WordPress
   theme using transparent backgrounds and currentColor
 * Fix: Frontend table first-column corners are now rounded only at the top-left
   and bottom-left (not on every row)
 * New: Output Theme setting now applies to all output styles (table, list, inline)—
   not just the table
 * New: Output Theme adds sensible color rules for Unordered List, Ordered List,
   and Inline output (Light, Dark, Auto, Custom Colors)
 * New: Bundled German translation (de_DE and de_DE_formal / « Sie »)
 * Removed: « Use Theme Styling » toggle (was conceptually broken — produced unstyled
   output with generic class names)
 * Removed: Redundant « Default License Name » text field (replaced by the License
   Type dropdown)
 * Improvement: Added direct file access protection (ABSPATH guard) to all PHP class
   files
 * Improvement: Updated dynamic block to Block API v3 for compatibility with the
   WordPress iframe editor (6.0+)
 * Improvement: Replaced wp_redirect() with wp_safe_redirect() in the bulk edit
   handler
 * Improvement: Renamed « Table Theme » to « Output Theme »; settings page heading
   corrected from « Image Sources Manager » to « Image Credit Companion »
 * Compliance: Resolved all WordPress Plugin Check warnings (variable prefixing,
   direct file access, DB parameter escaping)
 * Tested: Confirmed compatibility with WordPress 6.9
